A man by the name of Back Again Bandit, who allegedly robbed 22 banks in Arizona and one in Nevada in 10 months, has been arrested, the FBI said on Wednesday.

An FBI Violent Crime Task Force, with help from Phoenix Police, arrested Richard Zumbro, 44, after a U.S. bank robbery in Mesa on Monday.

The FBI said the series of thefts began in December 2020 and nearly all of them took place at banks or credit unions that were in supermarkets.

Zumbro received the nickname for allegedly robbing the same two banks in Phoenix and Tempe a total of five times.

He is accused in a federal criminal complaint of walking into supermarkets and giving a claim form to a cashier.

Authorities have not disclosed how much money was stolen in the 23 thefts.

The FBI said nine of the Arizona thefts took place in Phoenix, three in Casa Grande, two in Tucson, two in Tempe and Gilbert and one in Mesa, Chandler, Surprise and Maricopa.

The only heist in Nevada was on September 10 in Henderson, a suburb of Las Vegas.

As of Wednesday, it was not clear if Zumbro had an attorney who could speak for him.
